Elbi Henshaw, a resident of Barnet, North London, made a bold move to Dubai in January, hoping to escape the dreary UK lifestyle and embrace the allure of the Arabian Peninsula. Henshaw is now working six days a week, struggling to keep pace with the shockingly high cost of living in the glittering city.

“I left the UK because I was so miserable,” Henshaw explained. “I felt like I was just existing, not living. Dubai seemed like the answer – a chance to reinvent myself and enjoy life.” She envisioned a life filled with leisurely pursuits and cultural exploration, a stark contrast to the routine she felt trapped in back home.

But the dream quickly collided with a harsh financial reality. From groceries to rent, everything in Dubai comes with a hefty price tag. “Even a simple glass of wine can set you back £20,” Henshaw revealed, highlighting the significant financial burden she faces. The cost of accommodation is particularly striking; finding a decent apartment requires a substantial investment, and utility bills add to the ongoing expenses.

Henshaw isn't alone in her experience. While Dubai is known for its opulence and tax-free income, the reality for many expats is a constant struggle to balance their expenses with their earnings. The demand for skilled workers is high, leading to numerous job opportunities, but the high cost of living often negates the benefits of a higher salary.

“I’m working incredibly hard,” she admitted. “Six days a week, often long hours. It’s not exactly the relaxed lifestyle I was hoping for, but I’m determined to make it work.” She’s actively seeking ways to manage her budget and explore more affordable leisure activities, hoping to find a balance between work and enjoyment.

Henshaw's story serves as a cautionary tale for those considering relocating to Dubai. While the city undoubtedly offers incredible opportunities and a vibrant culture, it's crucial to thoroughly research the cost of living and be prepared for a potentially demanding financial reality. The allure of the Arabian dream can quickly fade if not managed effectively.

Despite the challenges, Henshaw remains optimistic. “It’s not perfect,” she concedes, “but I’m still glad I made the move. I’m learning a lot, meeting amazing people, and experiencing a culture that’s vastly different from my own. I just need to find a way to make it financially sustainable.” Her journey is a testament to the courage and resilience required to pursue a new life abroad, even when faced with unexpected obstacles.
